How a Ukrainian gets the right to work in Canada
The CUAET programme for Ukrainian citizens has been closed to new applications from abroad since 15 July 2023 (official IRCC page). General rules apply now:
- Employer-specific work permit under a contract. For it, the employer most often obtains approval from Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) to hire a foreign worker (LMIA).
- Permanent residence programmes for skilled workers, including Express Entry and provincial programmes. Canadian work experience is valued there.
- Temporary work under separate programmes and for a limited period.
Which route fits you depends on your specialisation, experience, language and province. Requirements are published by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC); we check them on the date of application.
Already in Canada under CUAET?
On 31 March 2026 IRCC announced that Ukrainians who arrived under CUAET on or before 31 March 2024 (or by 31 December 2024 if they were allowed to arrive later) can apply until 31 March 2027 to extend their work permit, for up to three years (IRCC news release). Documents and conditions for a Canadian work visa
The basic set usually includes:
- application forms in English or French;
- a passport (and old passports, if any);
- photos that meet IRCC requirements;
- a job offer and an employment contract;
- information about the employer's company.
Besides the documents, the applicant must pass a medical examination if it is required, have no criminal record, show funds for the first period and, for temporary work, be ready to leave when the permit ends.
